Procession Spin

I’ve shaped the flow of art—from the Jomon period to the present and beyond—into a single form.
The thoughts and prayers people wished to express by era are passing down while changing form.
From that sequence, I’m lining up the fragments that have drawn me in and remain in my heart.
Many hands have worked on, the colors emerge, it gradually rose up as a three-dimensional form.

From here on, the work belongs to the viewer.

“Procession Spin” is a ceramic relief artwork that brings together historical masterpieces, architectural forms, spiritual imagery, and visions of the future within a dynamic swirling composition.
The composition traces the history of artistic expression from the Jomon period to the present and beyond. Diverse forms of art created throughout history are connected in an unbroken flow, expressing the continuous evolution of human creativity. The title Procession Spin reflects this ongoing movement, while the artwork also visualizes the passage of time, revealing how the ideas, aspirations, and prayers embodied in art have been inherited, transformed, and reinterpreted across generations.

Measuring 2.4 meters high and 7.0 meters wide, the artwork consists of 168 individual pieces—164 ceramic relief panels and 4 bronze elements. Its monumental scale, sculptural depth, intricate detailing, and rich color palette create a powerful visual presence, leaving a lasting impression on visitors to Ginza.

Approximately 290 different glazes were combined to achieve the work’s remarkable colors and textures. Through carefully controlled glazing and firing techniques, the studio sought to recreate not only the appearance of diverse artistic forms but also the spirit and meaning they embody. Particular attention was given to achieving an unprecedented richness of surface texture.
The Jomon pottery motif on the right side was created using refined soil from Japanese rice fields blended into specially formulated glazes to reproduce the texture of ancient earthenware. The central image of the Eleven-Headed Kannon is finished with gold leaf, while the futuristic forms on the left employ layered low-temperature glazes to create a metallic finish. The motorcycle sticker in the lower left corner was hand-painted by the original artist, Katsuhiro Otomo.
