HIBINO Katsuhiko
Artist, President, Tokyo University of the Arts
Born in Gifu prefecture in 1958. Completed graduate school of Tokyo University of the Arts in 1984. Won Grand Prize at Japan Graphic Art Exhibition in 1982. Received the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award at Japan's Art Encouragement Prize in 2015 (Art Promotion Division). Develops art activities that make use of regional characteristics. Has supervised the art program "TURN" to exchange people with different backgrounds from 2014. Director at the Museum of Fine Arts, Gifu, Chairperson at Japan Football Association Social Contribution Committee, Expert Committee at Tokyo Metropolitan Arts and Culture Council and Director at Japan Traffic Culture Association.Location ： Hisao & Hiroko TAKIPLAZA, Tokyo University of the Arts, Ueno Campus
Production Notes
The International Exchange Building at Tokyo University of the Arts was built as a hub for international exchange where international students, Japanese students, and faculty members can learn and interact together. Aiming to be a vibrant facility for exhibitions, musical performances, and artwork presentations, as well as a place to relax and interact, public art based on the concept of “Artistic Co-creation” was installed.
One of these works, “Public Art for International Student Exchange,” was planned by our association. Under the overall direction of President Katsuhiko Hibino, it is a public art project created through a collaboration between international students, international student alumni, and CREARE Atami-Yugawara Studio, completing over the course of two years. It was envisioned that through the ceramic reliefs created by the international students, this artwork would serve as a foundation for interaction among visitors to the International Exchange Building.
Approximately 150 people from about 30 countries participated in the project. The designs for the 30-centimeter square ceramic panels were collected from international students through workshops or 2D/3D data submissions, and the panels were manufactured at CREARE Atami-Yugawara Studio. Since the installation is removable, the artworks can be freely swapped or rearranged, allowing visitors to enjoy adaptable and expanding exhibitions tailored to various situations.
