Western-style Painter
Born in 1898. Introduced surrealism for the first time in Japan. Formed Bijyutsu Bunka Art Association, and promoted the avant-garde art movement in the Showa period. Produced masterpieces "Defeated Group", "Collapse" and so on with his intense color and touch. Received the Order of Culture in 1991. Production Notes
This work is the origin of the public art project which Japan Traffic Culture Association has developed. The trigger is our proposal to install a real artwork at Tokyo Station for many passengers to see it as a railway 100th year anniversary project in 1972 to Mr. Isozaki, President of National Railways Corporation at that time. That is the stained glass “Creation of Heaven and Earth” based on the original painting by Mr. Ichiro Fukuzawa.
Mr. Isozaki saw the original painting and said, “This is an inspirational picture symbolizing the future of National Railways Corporation and the eternal world of mankind. If this can be made into a stained glass, that will be an art which hundreds of thousands of the passengers see every day.” He showed a deep understanding of public art. Then this work was realized.
Although it was installed in the central passage to Sobu Rapid Line originally, it was relocated to the side wall of the passage to Keiyo Line due to the Tokyo Station and Marunouchi restoration project afterward.
